Introduction to Art: Concepts and Techniques
The Modern and the Postmodern
1989 – 1993 Engineering. UNB, Waterloo
I started out in Electrical, but transferred to Mechanical at the end of my first year. Over the summer, I also was accepted into one of the “top tier” engineering programs, but only if I was willing to do Civil… so I spent the next year in Civil Engineering, and then transferred back into Mechanical. Again.
Favourite Subjects: Mechanics of Deformable Solids. Statics and Dynamics. Materials. Anything involving destructive testing.
1993 – 1998 Physics. Waterloo, McMaster
This was where my passion lay, and they wouldn’t let me take quantum mechanics or general relativity as an elective in engineering. Because of how the chips fall as you accumulate credits, this is also what my first two degrees are in.
I left at the end of the first year of a Ph.D. program after spending a couple of hundred hours reading back issues of WorldWatch magazine and realizing that I was more interested in those problems than what I was working on in the lab.
Favourite/Research Subjects: Solid State. Astrophysics. General Relativity and the fate of the universe. Neutron, X-ray, and electron diffraction. Particle physics. Phase transitions.
2000 – 2005 Adult and Higher Education. Brock, York
I started each of the B.Ed. and M.Ed. program on a whim. Different whim. Finished the B.Ed. Ran out of time trying to finish the M.Ed. while my husband was finishing his Ph.D. and I was working full time and we had two small kids.
Favourite/Research Subjects: Curriculum development. Instructional design. Program design. Engineering education. Identity formation. Sociology of Higher Education. Sociology of the Professions.
2014 – 2015 Internet Technology Entrepreneurship. CBU
Favourite Subjects: Back end engineering. Databases. Design. Pitching and presentation skills.
