Tech + Wisdom
Hi! I’m Seonaid, and I’ve been working my entire adult life on one problem:
What does it take to build ethical technology?
I’ve come at this from about a dozen different directions, considering the nature of technology itself, social structures, economics, sociology, power dynamics, psychology, and others.
I came around to focus on the place of the engineer in the decision making process. Ultimately I was trying to find the ways I could make a difference, and a lot of the writing was long on analysis and short on action. I can describe at great length what the problems with our democracy are, but it’s not at all clear to me what to do about it.
What I’ve come to is this: A lot more of us need to learn to ask hard questions a lot earlier in the process.
And that takes courage, strong relationship and communication skills, deep critical thinking, broad perspectives, and intellectual humility. Tech skills on their own can get us into deep trouble.
